What Are Tear-Offs?

Tear-offs are thin, transparent plastic films layered onto a driver’s crash helmet visor. During the race, once a film becomes soiled by insects or oil smear, the driver peels it away to reveal a clean layer beneath, restoring clear visibility.

How They Are Used

Drivers start a race with three or four tear-off visors, which they remove one after another as the need arises.

In NASCAR racing, tear-off films cover the driver’s half of the front car windscreen, and during a pit stop the crew removes the soiled layer to give the driver clear vision again.
